Ryan Pace coaches Marion softball in the spring but realizes the importance of having girls play summer ball.

That’s why Pace joined forces with Pine River coach Laura Mumby, who runs the summer Local Area Teams league that plays every Wednesday night during the summer. Games are either at Bristol Fields or at a home site. Games will go through the end of July.

Marion combined with Pine River JVs for one of the six teams in the league. Other teams are Pine River varsity, Reed City, Howard City Tri County, Cadillac and the Pine River-Reed City alumni.

It’s the first season Marion has played in the LAT League. Mumby invited Pace to have his team in the league. Pace put together seven Marion players and five from the Pine River Jvs for his combined squad.

“We lost two games to Pine River and two to Tri County, but we’re doing well,” Pace said.

Marion players include Teagan Cox, Allison DeBoer, Lena Hall, Brittney Ryan, Riley Richards, Hannah Hopkins and Taylor Hopkins

Pine River JV players are Taylor Hill, Megan Lockhart, Emily Trieber, Cayla Trowbridge and Molly Holmes.

Pitchers for the Marion team have included Riley Richards, Hannah Hopkins and Taylor Hopkins. Top hitters have been Taylor Hill, Riley Richards and Teagan Cox.

Both pitching and hitting are strengths, Pace said.

“We’re working on being a combined team on who’s going to be playing where defensively,” he said.

Not only is it the first time Marion is in the LAT league but the first known time to Pace there’s been a Marion summer high school team overall. Playing in the summer is of extreme value to the program, he added.
