The McBain Northern Michigan Christian boys basketball team gave Mt. Pleasant Sacred Heart a fight in the two’s class ‘D’ district final in Marion Friday night. The Irish were just a bit too strong however as they topped the Comets, 62-52.
Sacred Heart led the game 10-6 after the first quarter but the Comets could only net three points in the second, leading to a 24-13 hole at the half.
The Comets started the third quarter with some of their best play of the night, going on a 9-0 run pull within 24-22 and they pulled as close as 25-24 their next trip down the court.
The Irish wouldn’t let the Comets hang so close the rest of the period though, as they led 37-32 entering the fourth.
The Comets were led by Chase Gernaat with 21 points and Carson Bassett netted 14.
NMC reached the championship game with a 59-53 win over Big Rapids Crossroads in the semi-final on Wednesday, March 8.
The Cougars topped the Comets in the team’s season opening game but the Comets got revenge in this post-season battle.
Crossroads led 9-6 after the first quarter but Gernaat trey as the buzzer sounded on the first half lifted the Comets to a 22-20 lead at the break.
The Comets led by as much as seven points in the third before the Cougars clawed back to tie it at 36-all entering the fourth.
The fourth quarter saw Gernnaat ice the game with 17 points in the stanza.
Gernaat finished with 31 points.
NMC finishes the season 7-15 overall.
