Northern Michigan Christian School is grateful to have been chosen as a recipient of a $1,470 grant awarded by the Missaukee Area Community Foundation, a geographical component fund of the Cadillac Area Community Foundation, that has helped to make possible their upcoming presentation of Seussical the Musical, Friday, April 28th and Saturday, April 29th at 7:00 p.m. on each date.
Each year, the NMCS Drama Department presents a production to give students a feel for theater, choreography and song by performing classicals, family friendly theater, or modern-day dramas. Past drama performances include Pride and Prejudice, Charlotte’s Web, and The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and musicals including Annie, Beauty and the Beast, Oklahoma! and Fiddler on the Roof.
Through these productions, high school students have the opportunity to perform and work backstage or behind the scenes. Middle school and elementary students are also exposed to the fine arts through these productions, opportunities that are otherwise limited for northern Michigan residents. Between 20-50 students and parent volunteers take part in the musical by either performing, being part of the orchestra, stage managing, set design or helping in some other way.
This year, we expect to perform for over 1,250 people in the new Elenbaas Performing Arts Center in McBain. Students from area schools are invited to attend. “By inviting students from area schools to the performance we are providing an avenue in which they can be introduced to the arts in real ways,” states NMCS Drama Director Jill Haan. She adds, “This year’s cast is one of the hardest working groups of kids with whom I have ever had the pleasure of working.
They are committed, diligent in learning and producing excellence, and super fun. This is Julie VanHaitsma and my 15th production together at NMCS. The musical itself is a testament to believing in ourselves and realizing that anything is possible. It is a fun, Seussical look at our thinks and imaginations, and how those thinks and imaginations can create a world of possibility we did not necessarily realize. It is also a great reminder that a “person is a person no matter how small.””
