MHS seniors graduate May 26

Marion High School has announced commencement plans and its co-valedictorians and salutatorian for 2017.
Graduation is 7 p.m. on May 26 at Marion High School Gymnasium. Colors are maroon and silver and the flower is Calla Lily. The class song is “Don’t Blink” by Kenny Chesney

The motto is “Isn’t it funny how day by day nothing changes, but when you look back, everything is different?” C.S. Lewis

Valedictorians are Kylie Sikkema and Isaiah Keeler and salutatorian is Jared Deighton.

Isaiah Keeler Co-Valedictorian

Deighton, the school said, is the son of Jeremy and Heather Deighton. He is graduating with highest honors, earning a career GPA of a 3.94. He has been a class officer for four years, and a  member of both the National Honor Society and M-PACT. He has also volunteered at blood drives, food drives and Saturday morning basketball.

Throughout high school, Jared has been a part of many extracurricular activities. He has participated in basketball, cross country, track and field, and baseball.The school said Jared’s favorite high school memory is being able to spend time will all of his friends. One piece of advice he gives is “Don’t ever lose your will to learn.”

The school said he has attributed his success in high school to his parents, teachers, and anyone who has ever helped him when he needed it. He will attend Calvin College to study Mathematics, Economics and Pre-ministry.

Isaiah Keeler Co-Valedictorian

Isaiah Keeler, the school said, is the son of Jason and Stephanie Keeler and is the co-valedictorian, graduating with highest honors, earning a 4.0 career GPA. Keeler has served as the class president for all four years of high school, and has been a member of M-PACT, the National Honor Society, and the National Technical Honor Society. He has also been on mission trips.

Keeler has been a member of the cross country and track and field teams for four years. He says his favorite memory from school is being able to be with his friends everyday and would advise them to “live your dream.” He will attend the University of Michigan to study either mechanical engineering or aerospace engineering, the school said.

Sikkema is the daughter of Brad and Kim Sikkema and is the co-Valedictorian for the class of 2017. The school said Kylie has earned highest honors with a GPA of 4.0. Sikkema has been involved in many activities, the school said, and has been a member of M-PACT for four years. Sikkema is also a member of Students Leading Students and the National Honor Society and has been involved with volunteer activities such as food drives, Earth Day cleanup, removing invasive species from Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes, and has helped run various M-PACT, SLS and NHS activities.

Sikkema has been involved in cross country, basketball and track and field all four years of high school and says some of her favorite high school memories include earning the cross country school record, winning Homecoming Queen and spending time with her best friends.

She says, “In academics and athletics you will always face challenges and feel the urge to give up.  Remember in those moments that you don’t want to settle for the “second best” version of yourself. Challenges will make you stronger, and one day you will thank yourself for never settling.”

The school said Sikkema will go to Saginaw Valley State University where she will major in Occupational Therapy.  She will also run cross country and track at SVSU.
