The McBain Northern Michigan Christian girls soccer team notched an impressive win over Gladwin on Thursday, as the Comets topped the Flying G’s 4-1 in a Northern Michigan Soccer League South Division contest. All this after having to pull off an overtime win over Gladwin just a few weeks ago.

“The first time we played them, it had been a fairly well contested game and evenly played, this one we just converted our shots, that was the big difference,” NMC head coach Dave VanHaitsma said. “The first time around we didn’t shoot as well. This time we played well really on all fronts.”

The game was scoreless through much of the first half but the Lady Comets kicked in three goals in the final 10 minutes of the frame to lead 3-0 at the break. NMC kicked in another one early in the second half to make it 4-0.

“We started out slowly in this one, the first 30 minutes we were pretty much just going north and south and that makes you an easy team to defend,” VanHaitsma said. “After we scored the first one we did much better. Gladwin ended up first in the south, so it was a quality win. We had a problem developing consistent play but we played a whole lot sharper in this game.”
Getting a pair of goals for the Comets was Desiree Ebels, Maddie Lanser had a goal and an assist with Carissa Smith also kicking in a goal. Sydney Hart earned an assist on the night as well.

Kendra VanPolen was in goal and made 11 saves.

On Wednesday, May 10 the Comets cruised to an 8-1 win over visiting Big Rapids Crossroads.

NMC led 5-1 at the half and booted in three more goals the second frame to coast to the win.

“Crossroads has struggled this year but still, to win 8-1 was a nice victory to have,” VanHaitsma said. “We had four different girls score so to spread it out like that is a good thing. We played a pretty strong team game and we got all 17 players into the game, which is always nice too since they’re all working hard at practice.”

Maddie Lanser and Smith kicked in three goals apiece with Smith adding an assist. Ebels had a goal and an assist and Anna Lanser had one goal as well.

VanPolen was in goal and made five saves.

NMC (10-5 overall) played a NMSL crossover game at Houghton Lake on Wednesday and plays at Kingsley next Thursday.
