The Marion and surrounding areas appears to have survived the flooding which hit hard on communities to the east including Midland and Mount Pleasant late last week.

Marion Village clerk Marsha Turner said there was no reported problems with flooding, to her knowledge.

Others reported the same.

“We dodged a bullet,” Luke Houlton of the Osceola County Road Commission, said. “The heavy rains were south and east of us. Our crew has been chasing down washouts throughout the county as we get calls, but nothing major or out the ordinary for a heavy rain fall.”

“Fortunately Osceola County did not suffer the same problems as Isabella or Midland counties,” Osceola County undersheriff Justin Halladay said. “Our emergency management is providing support to those counties.”

Osceola County extension agent Jerry Lindquist indicated that Osceola County farmers basically escaped the type of problems others to the east would have received.

But heavy rains late last week and on Wednesday night were not expected to leave the area unscathed.

“We had washouts on a few fields,” Lindquist said. “We didn’t get the heavy rains like the Mount Pleasant area. It’s nice for the fields to get a drink of water.”

But heavy rains can have it drawbacks.

“It’s putting a stop on haymaking,” Lindquist said. “That’s not good news. We need some sunshine.”
