Commission on Aging locations in Osceola County.

It’s a grand opening Osceola County Commission on Aging director Scott Schryer has been looking forward to for a long time.
The new COA site in Marion has its grand opening 4-7 p.m. next Tuesday.

“The community can come through and see what we’ve put in place for the seniors and give us some feedback,” Schryer said.
Refreshments will be served.

“We invited anybody, senior or even under age, to come out and enjoy a meal for us (at noon)” Schryer said. “It’s at noon. They have to sign up by 12:30 the previous day so we can have our count and numbers by the next day. At lot of people have asked about the cost. An individual 60 years or older, it’s a $2 suggested donation. If they don’t have the $2, that’s fine, it doesn’t affect that. If someone is under the age of 60, but is bringing a senior, it’s all under that same $2 suggestion.
“Since we’ve been open, we’ve had great turnouts. We’ve had an average of about 20 people a day. The word is still spreading. It’s very exciting to see.”

The facility is open Monday through Fridays. The building hours are usually 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“We’re in the midst of reviewing our times and looking at expanding those,” Schryer said. “The meal is obviously important for nutrition purposes. That’s about half of what we do there. The other half deals with socialization as a big part of it and getting people to do things to challenge their brains. For bingo games, not only are they challenging their brains or seeing their numbers or matching things, they’re seeing the dexterity of their hands to put the pieces on the right spots
“Another game we like to do is is a dice game. It’s the mobility of their hands and challenges their faculties. We also offer healthy classes like Our Matter of Balance classes that we’re currently offering in Reed City. It’s what to look out for on fall hazards.”
