According to a Leelanau County press release, at 12:16 p.m. Monday afternoon, the Leelanau County Sheriff’s Department and local fire and rescue responded to a deadly accident just north of East Cherrybend Road on M-22. An initial investigation revealed that Vomastek, 85, was headed southbound on M-22 in a 2012 blue Kia, followed by a large utility truck driven by a 37 year-old Kingsley man. A 2007 tan Hyundai, driven northbound by Dominic Robert Holly, a 26 year-old Mancelona resident, crossed the centerline for unknown reasons. Vomastek attempted to avoid a collision by moving to the right, but the two vehicles collided head on. The Hyundai was struck again by the utility vehicle, and the driver of the Hyundai, Holly, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the utility vehicle was not injured.

Dr. Vomastek touched the lives of so many since he opened his family medical practice in McBain nearly 50 years ago. He opened his McBain practice in the summer of 1968, and soon after took over his role as Marion’s family doctor as well, a title he’s held up to this very day.

Dominic Holley, the driver of the tan Hyundai, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.

While most will remember him as their hometown doctor, Roy was also an extremely accomplished golfer; he was also a farmer, a licensed pilot, a fisherman, a military veteran, and a kind and caring friend, husband, father and grandfather.
Funeral arrangements are pending at the Burkholder Family Funeral Home in McBain. An in-depth look at the life and influence of Dr. Roy L. Vomastek will be in next week’s Marion Press.
