McBain Northern Michigan Christian gave Mt. Pleasant Sacred Heart a battle and then some Wednesday night. The Lady Comets couldn’t quite edge the Lady Irish however, as their season came to an end in a home class ‘D’ district semi-final game in five close sets, 25-20, 17-25, 22-25, 25-23 and 15-13.

“I’m proud of our effort tonight, we just came up short,” NMC head coach Amy Swanson said. “My girls gave it everything they had tonight against a tough team.”

Leading the team on the night were Kari VanPolen with 14 kills, four digs and two blocks, Olivia Baas had 11 kills and 12 digs, Jackie Powell had nine kills and two blocks, Maddie Lanser had eight kills, one block 11 digs and 33 assists and Desiree Ebels had four kills and 19 digs.

“We lost our senior middle, Madelyn Yount early in our second set and when you have a Sophie Ruggles on the opposing team, it’s important to defend that well. Jackie Powell a sophomore did a great job coming in for her and matched up against Sacred Heart’s front row well. My back row players, Ellie Haan, Ebels and Cami Demott played a great match and helped us to stay in each set.”

The loss ends the Comets season, though Swans was still pretty happy with how things went.

“I’m happy with this season, my team worked really hard day in and day out to get prepared for districts,” she said. “We had a couple of injuries and they were resilient through it all. Our record showed a lot of success. Next season looks to be another promising one with some athletic players coming in that are coachable.”
