Time to update an ageing system

January 18, 2018

Letter to the Editor_BannerLetter to The Editor,

It’s Time to Update Decades Old 911 Infrastructure.
The current 911 network infrastructure is based on technology that is nearly 50 years old and as such was designed around calls made from the old kitchen phone.
This network has served us well, however the substantial influx of cell phones and internet calling have severely overtaxed that technology, leaving 911 dispatchers unable to effectively and efficiently locate incidents and dispatch first responders. With limited services for the hearing and speech impaired, technologies like texting have become critical in their communication and are also not fully supported by existing 911 infrastructure.
Next Generation 911 solves these problems for 911 dispatchers, first responders, and citizens. SB 400, before the Michigan House of Representatives right now, would bring Next Generation 911 to Michigan, allowing today’s broadband internet technology to be applied to 911, and close the technology gap for 911 infrastructure.
Next Generation 911 will allow 911 to handle both today’s and tomorrow’s technology, result in more efficiencies, and save valuable time in getting fire, police, and EMS to those in critical need. Please contact your Michigan Representative and encourage him/her to support SB 400 today.
