The McBain Northern Michigan Christian boys basketball team put up a fight in Houghton Lake Monday night. The Comets came up just short in the non-league game however, 54-53 in overtime.

“It was a physical game, which was good for us,” head coach Shawn Pattee said. “I’m proud of my players for keeping their composure and just playing basketball. We played great defense, we just gave up too many second chance points and too many unforced turnovers. We missed a couple lay ups and shot 50-perfcent from the free throw line and we lost by one. We clean those things up and we’re playing great ball.”

Leading the team was Coleman Bassett with 20 points, Carson Bassett netted 16 and Bryce Hoekwater had 11.

“I thought Kirk Smallegan did a great job,” Pattee said. “He battled their big guy all night and took charge and rebounded well. He always plays great defense for us. He’s kind of a player that does all the little things for us. Overall, I think we’re peaking at the right time and just need to clean some things up.”

On Friday, Feb. 2 the Comets notched a home Highland Conference win over Evart, 59-48.

“We continue to play solid defense, our effort and energy is always there which is great,” Pattee said. “I was very proud of our senior leadership. It was a close game throughout. The first half we couldn’t make a shot or rebound very well, however we continued to battle and I thought Connor Winkle came off the bench and not only played good but gave us some great energy. The second half we started making some threes and we made an adjustment at halftime that started getting us open a little more.”

Coleman Bassett led the way with 21 points, with Hoekwater and Carson Bassett putting in 16 each.

“Hoekwater continues to be unstoppable getting to the basket,” Pattee said. “Coleman is playing some great basketball too.
NMC (8-6 overall, 5-3 Highland) heads to Marion tonight (Friday), travels to Pine River on Thursday and hosts Beal City on Feb. 21.
