McBain coasts to district finals

Step one of hopefully many is in the books. The McBain boys basketball team, playing Lake City in a class ‘C’ district semi-final game in Roscommon Wednesday night, picked up a 67-35 victory.

The game was knotted up at 11-all after the first quarter, though McBain opened the second with a quick 5-0 run to take a 16-11 edge.

The Ramblers also closed the half on a 15-2 run, giving them control of the game with a 35-17 lead at half-time.

McBain took a 20 point lead dwith a Garrett VerBerkmoes field goal at 42-22 and it only pulled away from there.

Leading the way in the win was Nic Rodenbaugh with 21 points, thanks in part to three treys. VerBerkmoes finished with 11, Michael Heuker Jr and Jarrett Koopman had 10 points each and both hit two threes, Seager Wiltzer had seven points and Ethan Clark and Logan Rodenbaugh had three points each.

On Thursday, March 1 the Ramblers closed out the regular season with a win over Kalkaska in a non-league game, 76-47.
McBain saw to a 26-12 lead after the first quarter and didn’t slow down from there, extending that margin to 40-24 at the half and 63-33 entering the fourth quarter.

The Ramblers, who hit for 56-percent from the floor were led by Rodenbaugh with 21 points, Wiltzer knocked down 20 points, Heuker netted seven and with six apiece were Andrew Sikkema, Koopman and VerBerkmoes.

McBain (18-3 overall) returns to Roscommon tonight (Friday) to play Houghton Lake (12-9) for the district championship. The winner moves on to the Houghton Lake regional semi-final on Monday, with the regional championship slated for Wednesday.
