Osceola County Commissioner Roger Elkins of Evart is expecting various county committees to be extremely busy in upcoming weeks.

The safety and grounds committee have not met recently Elkins noted.

“We probably need to get rolling on that and see what we can do,” he said.

Commissioner Jack Nehmer of Marion has expressed frustration that various recommendations from that committee have yet to be put into place.

Elkins said he’s been in contact with county officials regarding implementation of various committee recommendations, including on courthouse security.

“I would suspect fairly soon we’ll have security (measures) available for the court,” Elkins said.

Elkins noted Evart’s Downtown Development Authority is beginning the process this week of becoming a designated Main Street through the Michigan Main Street program of the Michigan Economic Development corporation. The DDA is expected to announce its efforts earlier this week as a Selected City to have the aim of becoming a designated Michigan Main Street. The special kickoff event was for people to learn more about the program’s preservation based economic development emphasis.

Elkins said the Evart City Council recently approved the use of medical marijuana.
