The McBain School District’s proposal for 2.1 additional mills that would raise $14 million for various projects was turned down by voters on Tuesday.

The unofficial results, as announced by the Missaukee County clerk’s office, was 661 no votes, and 409 yes.

One of the areas addressed by the district’s proposal was parking. Plans would be to remove the baseball and softball fields, and turn old fields into a parking lot. New baseball and softball fields would be relocated to the north, back by the practice fields, and would be a long-term solution to the parking shortage. There would also be new concession stands and bathrooms.

On the area of school safety, the school was looking at securing entries during the day and mandating people to go into an office before having access to the building. New cameras would be installed in the building, and an elementary AM drop off would be changed by adding a new road running east and west, contingent on city approval. There would be upgrades of emergency lighting and the alarm, system and asbestos removal.

The proposal called for one new school bus per year, continuation of the 1-to-1 system and new switches and servers.

In a statement, following the election, to the Marion Press, Brimmer said:
“We are disappointed in the results. There have been no discussions of what will happen next. We still have some very expensive items that are reaching the end of their life expectancy and the Board will need to discuss how to address them. I’d like to thank the bond committee for their efforts on this bond proposal. We have people that spent a lot of time and effort on this.”
