MCD plans Invasive Species Awareness campaign

LAKE CITY — The Missaukee Conservation District has announced Aquatic Invasive Species Awareness Week for July 2-8.

 The week will be a joint effort between North Country Cooperative Invasive Species Management Area, Missaukee Conservation District, Missaukee County Parks, and Missaukee Lakes Association to educate individuals about aquatic invasive species.

The district has announced on Friday, July 6, volunteers are needed to hand out educational material and promotional items to boaters and park visitors at Lake Missaukee County Park, Crooked Lake Campground, and Green Road Boat Launch. Volunteers are needed for two to three hours slots, and can contact Mimi Zwolak to volunteer at Green Road; contact Missaukee Conservation District to volunteer at either Lake Missaukee or Crooked Lake: 231 (839) 7193 or email

It was also announced that on July 6, the MSU Mobile Boat Wash will be set up at Lake Missaukee County Park noon to 5 p.m.
The district announced there will be a Controlling Autumn Olive Workshop & Demonstration from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday. July 7, at the South Branch Town Hall in Cadillac.

Participants will learn to identify and control autumn olive using chemical and non-chemical methods. Workshop will be led by Vicki Sawicki, an Invasive Species Specialist.
