Marion superintendent Mort Meier’s appeal on repayment to the Office of Retirement Services has reportedly been denied.
TV 9&10 of Cadillac reported this on Tuesday.

Discussions have taken place at recent Marion School District Board meetings on this issue.

Media reports have focused on documents that show the Office of Retirement Services is asking Meier and secretary Diana Salisbury to repay more than $145,000. The contention according to reports is that Meier and Salisbury were collecting a pension along with a salary. Meier has called the claims “baseless” and he and Salisbury have filed appeals.

But now the appeals by both he and Salisbury have been denied. Meier can appeal the decision with the Michigan Administrative Hearing System. Salisbury is waiting for a hearing date with the MAHS.

Board president Monica Cox has previously said the board’s attorney has said this is not a board issue but is between Meier and Salisbury and the ORS.

“We’re waiting to hear back from the appeals,” Cox said. “The school board is not really involved in that. It’s an issue with the (administrators’) lawyers.”

Contacted on Thursday morning, following news of the denial, “that was just the first step, and they get to take it to the next level,” Cox said. “That’s the common practice. They’re not reopening it through ORS, is my understanding. I don’t know how the process works since it’s not something the board is involved with.”

The next board meeting is 6 p.m. on June 20.
