Pollington expansion expected to add 30 employees

A welcome addition.

Pollington Machine Tool is adding close to 20,000 square feet of manufacturing space, hoping to fill it with equipment and an additional 30 employees within the next three years.

For now, however, the task at hand for the Marion-based machine and tool company is to maintain the steady, sustainable growth of recent years – the type of growth that led to the current expansion.

“We grow every year,” said Pollington’s General Manager, Ross Richards. “We’ve had slow, steady growth for the last 15 years, and we’re continuing on that trend. Right now, we just don’t have any floor space to be able to put anything. And we’re seeing opportunities to quote some pretty good programs, so we’ll need the space to take the new work on.”

Specializing in machining, fabrication, CNC, and aluminum extrusion, Pollington’s client base consists mostly of companies in the aerospace, military, and automotive industries. Machining parts for companies such as Tesla, Ford, and Jeep, Richards sees potential for the company to grow in the automotive industry – due in part to the shop’s aluminum extrusion capabilities.

“We do a lot of aluminum and a lot of aluminum extrusion machining here, and the automotive industry, in general, is going more towards aluminum,” Richards said. “Because of rules and regulations in order to get better gas mileage, they make vehicles lighter, and they’ve switched from steel to aluminum – so that’s kind of been a driver for the growth of automotive for us.”

With automotive work accounting for roughly 15% of Pollington’s current total output, Richards sees some areas of opportunity.

“We’ve been quoting more automotive platforms, which is kind of generating this expansion,” Richards said. “When we quote on programs, they’re usually down the road 2 to 3 years; that gives us time to get prepared – from buying equipment, to making fixtures, to going through testing.”

The 20,000 square foot expansion includes bathrooms and a lunch room, with the remaining space to eventually be dedicated to housing machines and equipment. In the meantime, the addition will simply be used as needed.

“Probably right out of the gate, we’ll store materials to get started,” Richards said. “Reorganize a little bit. Eventually it will house machines and equipment for making parts.”

The addition – with most of the work being contracted through local companies – is set to be enclosed by September and completed by November. As one of the larger employers in the area, the expansion could eventually have a big impact on the local economy.

“We’re at about 70 employees right now,” Richards said. “Once we fill that addition up, we’ll probably add another 30 plus jobs.”

Indeed, a welcome addition.
