2018 Marion Days Was A Hit

August 16, 2018

Letter to the Editor_BannerDear Editor,
This past weekend of ‘Marion Days’, was one of the best. There was lots to do and hundreds of people in town. Thank you to everyone that made it so enjoyable.
One of my highlights was purchasing a book at one of the sidewalk booths called “Bicycle Cowboy” by Ron Helmboldt. In fact, I purchased it from Ron and he had already autographed the inside cover.
If you want to have great memories and heartwarming moments of Marion – you need to buy this book. As I was reading it, my mind was in movie mode, and I was watching in real time all the adventures Ron was describing. The football game story was full of names, such as Bryce Swiler, Jack Baker, Fred Sible, Fred Thompson, Ron Meis, Coach Dietz, Dan Williams, Leon Mosher, Cal Case, Jim Lithen, Steve Baker, etc., etc. It is a great read.
Other chapters take you to the Sun Theatre, Hillcrest Drive-in, the swimming pool below the dam with lifeguards such as Johnie Eisenhart, Eugene Baughan, visiting Spikehorn in Harrison. Ball games at the park, fishing with Jeanne, walking the R.R. tracks, Mel’s barbershop stories and so many more.
As you can see, I like traveling back in time with Ron. I am older than Ron (class of 1959), but the places in Marion, I still can relate to and enjoy the bicycle ride around town. Thanks Ron for writing a book that brings back memories and great smiles.
Sincerely,
Sharon Watt Cutler
