The McBain cross country teams are both loaded with talent and are hoping for big things in the 2018 season. Last year the Lady Ramblers won the Highland Conference and just missed out on the state finals with a fourth place finish in regionals. The boys were runners-up in second place in league action.

“We have a good core of runners this year,” girls head coach Tasha O’Malley said. “If we stay healthy and work hard, we should be able to do some good things. We have big hopes for both our boys and girls teams. We are hoping that we can get as many of them to reach their ultimate potential this year.”

Returning for the girls team is Klaudia O’Malley (senior, fourth at state finals), Ashley Schierbeek (senior), Brianna Eisenga (junior), Megan Taylor (junior), Maggie O’Malley (sophomore), Keagan Strickland (sophomore), McKenna Gilde (sophomore), Alexis Gilde (sophomore), Laura Doolittle (sophomore), Madison Whetsone (sophomore) and Natalie Pollington (sophomore). New to the girls will be junior Couper Agema and freshmen Reese Ensing and Kila Boonstra.

Making the return for the boys will be Keegan O’Malley (senior), Zach Bode (senior), Daniel Quist (senior), Chase Pylkas (senior), Andrew Roby (senior), Kadin Eastway (sophomore), Jaden Blood (sophomore), Mason Heuker (sophomore) and Blake Whetstone (sophomore).

New for the boys will be senior Devin Morris, sophomores Grayson Verberkmoes, Connor Murphy, Kyle Pylkas and Gregory Slutier and freshmen Cole Ingleright, Tucker VanderVelde and Bradley Springberg.

“The Highland has some good runners on both the girls and guys side,” O’Malley said. “It is hard to say right now who will be at the top but it is our team goal to be at the top and we are hoping to reach that goal. The other goal is to place in the top three in the regional so we can qualify for state.”

McBain heads to the Benzie Central Invitational on Saturday and heads to the Shepherd Invitational on Sept. 5.
