At the beginning of the 2018 cross country season, Marion head coach Jason Keeler knew that his girls squad had a chance to compete for a West Michigan D League crown, as long as they were willing to put in the work to get there.

On Wednesday, October 3rd, that season’s worth of hard work paid off as the Lady Eagles took home the conference tournament championship at Mason County Eastern.

“The whole team has been working really hard,” said Keeler. “[We’ve] had this meet marked on our calendar for a while.”
Leading the Eagles and finishing with All-Conference honors were senior Kathryn Nowland [24:07] finishing in 4th place, followed by junior Alexis Salisbury [25:12] in 6th place.

Haley Miller [29:22], Riley Kischnick [29:40], and Andrea Weaver [29:53] rounded out the scoring for the Eagles, finishing in 13th, 14th, and 15th places, respectively. Alyssa Thompson [32:36] and Ashley Colberg [32:52] both finished in the top twenty.

“Hayle responded really well to the warmer than normal temperatures to finish her last conference race as a senior with a season best effort,” Keeler said. “Congrats to all the ladies on a great race tonight.”

On the boys’ side, Marion finished 6th out of 6 full teams, but ran with a full squad for the first time in West Michigan D League competition – a trend Keeler hopes to continue.

“It’s always a better feeling to know that when you are putting in all that effort in the race and practice that your teammates are also working together towards the same goal,” Keeler said.

The boys were led by Gaven Romatz [23:01] and Jacob Chamberlain [23:59] finishing in 30th and 33rd places, respectively. Mason Davis [25:20], Eric Williams [25:29], and Abdulaziz Alfouzan [29:42] rounded out the scoring for the Eagles.
In the middle school tournament races, every runner on Marion’s girls squad finished with a season-best time, with Nolah Grundy [15:09] leading the way in 23rd place, good for second team all-conference honors. Karma Levine [17:04], Elizabeth Fouch [17:06], Selena Quintero [17:17], Lisah Buchanan [22:10], and Hannah Bergey [22:23] all posted season-best times. Trey Davis [16:38] led the boys with a 35th place finish.
