After dropping a tight West Michigan D League contest to Mesick the previous week, the Eagles left no doubt as to the outcome on Friday, making quick work of the host Panthers, 74-0.

It was a game that was decided early, with Marion’s junior varsity squad playing the entire second half in the blowout.
“It’s nice to have games like that,” Marion coach Chad Jenema said. “And the kids get excited. If you score a touchdown in a varsity game, that’s a varsity touchdown. It’s a pretty cool thing.”

The Eagles offense took care of business early, with senior Chuck Ankney running for 107 first half yards and 3 touchdowns on only 5 carries. Not to be outdone, senior Ryder Hall ran for 78 yards and 2 touchdowns on only 3 carries. Junior Brandon Stewart added 70 yards on 6 carries, while sophomore Jason Seabolt led the second half charge with 51 yards and 2 touchdowns on 3 carries.

“Chuck ran really well,” said Jenema. “It’s nice to see him healthy. And Ryder’s been a big boost to our team – he’s fast, and he’s been a difference maker. We’ve needed him, especially with some of the injuries we’ve had to our backfield.”
The Eagles defense was led by Ankney with 12 tackles, including 5 for loss. Senior lineman Zane Philo added 8 tackles, with Konner Lane adding 7.

The Eagles [3-3 overall] will look to take a healthy squad into a big West Michigan D League tilt at home against Manistee Catholic Central [4-2] on Friday. Absent the season-ending injury to captain Billy Jenema, the Eagles will finally take a healthy roster into the game.

“This is the first time all year we’ve been healthy,” Jenema said. “Chuck’s healthy. Brandon’s healthy. And Manistee Catholic’s a good team, so we’ll need everyone to show up and play good disciplined football. We can’t have the turnovers or the missed tackles. It’s basically a must-win game if we want to make the playoffs.”
