The McBain Northern Michigan Christian boys basketball team closed out the new year with a non-conference game at home against Buckley Friday night. The Comets were up to the challenge, as they survived a sluggish first half and pulled away in the second half for a 68-54 victory.

After the first quarter, the Bears held a 19-16 lead and they still led 31-29 at the half. NMC turned the tables in the third and took a 41-39 lead entering the fourth and dominated the final frame to secure the win. Collectively NMC hit six three pointers and buried 25 shots from behind the free throw line.

Leading the way in the win for the Comets was Grant Pogue with a solid 20 points, Jamey Haan poured in 13 points and Tanner Mulder chipped in with 11 points and hauled down eight rebounds.

NMC (3-4 overall) is off until it hosts Beal City on Jan. 8 for a Highland Conference tilt and heads to Pine River Jan. 10.
