Commissioner Roger Elkins of Evart and commissioner-elect Tim Michell of Marion attended a commissioner’s training session in Marion earlier this week in Gaylord.

“It’s something that Michigan State University Extension offers,” Elkins said. “They generally have it every two years while there are commissioner elections. They generally do it at four or five different sites. So they have presentations on how finance works, basic governancy, Open Meetings Act and parlimentary procedures. They’re very well done.

“At one time, they had a notebook, now it’s on a flash drive so you can up their power points and notes and other things you can go through. Myself and Tim Michell, the newly elected commissioner, attended this one from our county. I thought it was very well attended. There were about 40 to 50 people who attended.”

Elkins went to accompany Michell, who is replacing retiring Alan Tiedt in District 4 which represents Hartwick, Middle Branch, Orient, and Sylvan Townships New commissioners take over on Jan. 1, 2019.
