Larry Emig is still on the Osceola County Board of Commissioners but has lost his job as board chairman.

In Wednesday’s organizational meeting, Jack Nehmer of Marion was voted 4-3 over Emig as the new chairman.

“That’s fine with me,” Emig said/ “Things happen like that and there’s change. If I was elected chair that would have been fine as well.”

Emig had been chair for more than six years.

“The chair needs to be informed of all facets of the county,” he said. “He needs (not) to be an expert or master of all things but at least familiar of all things and to some extent have a chance to be involved. As chair, I’ve represented the county on a number of boards. I normally try to make sure I’m there. You’re a little more involved than just being a commissioner.”

The committee of the whole format the county now uses enables all members to be involved in the decision making process on various issues, Emig said. He was president of the Michigan Association of counties at one time.

Emig, who represents the Reed City area, was narrowly renominated to his seat in the Republican primary in August. He faced no Democratic opposition in the November election.
