Since the start of the new year the McBain boys basketball team hasn’t exactly had the most steady schedule. The Ramblers, who played in just their second game in the calendar year on Friday, didn’t let that get in their way Friday, as they easily handled Lake City 82-45 in a Highland Conference battle.

“We are reaching the halfway point of the season, so every game is about playing consistent on both ends of the floor,” head coach Bruce Koopman said. “Since returning from Christmas break we have played in just two games I thought this game was a step in the right direction, especially in the second half.”

Logan Rodenbaugh led the squad with 16 points, Daniel Rodenbaugh was good for14 points, Grayson Verberkmoes chipped in with nine points and adding in with seven points was Daniel Quist.

The Ramblers have plenty of league games yet, but are happy to be undefeated in the Highland four games in.

“Our goal is to win a conference championship, while making a deep run in March,” Koopman said. “The win over Lake City was a conference game win on the road. Defense, rebounding and offensive execution are necessary to reach those two goals.”
McBain (8-1 overall, 4-0 Highland) hosts McBain Northern Michigan Christian tonight (Friday), heads to Cadillac on Tuesday and makes the trip to Glen Lake Thursday.

“The key to our success is the play of our bench and everyday I’m getting more and more comfortable with their play,” Koopman said. “They bring energy and athleticism which allows us to pick teams up full court defensively.”
