The McBain girls basketball team wrapped up one of its busiest portions of its schedule Tuesday night. The Lady Ramblers were hosting Big Rapids in their fourth game in the last six days, though they dropped the non-league contest 35-32.

Big Rapids started off with a 14-9 lead after the first quarter and held a double digit edge of 25-13 at the half. McBain closed within 27-22 entering the fourth but couldn’t finish off the comeback in the final eight minutes.

Pacing the team on the night was Emma Schierbeek with seven points, Klaudia O’Malley had six and Couper Agema and Brianna VanHouten had five apiece.

On Monday the Ramblers earned a big non-league win over Cadillac, 46-34.

McBain got off to a good start and claimed a 14-3 lead after the first quarter and held a 20-10 margin at the half. Cadillac crawled within 32-24 entering the fourth but McBain finished off the win without much of a threat.

Leading the Ramblers was Schierbeek with 12 points, VanHouten had 11 points and Agema netted 10.

On Friday, the Ramblers came up short with crosstown rival McBain Northern Michigan Christian, 46-34.

Pacing the team was Schierbeek with 10 points in the Highland Conference game and O’Malley notched eight points.

On Wednesday, Feb. 20 McBain dropped a league game at Manton, 56-28.

Olyvia Nederhood led the team with nine points.

“Three out of our last four games, we have seen at least some zone defense from the opposing teams,” head coach Drew Bronkema said. “We struggle to consistently move the ball as a team and shoot the ball with confidence from the outside. We got a big win versus Cadillac which was a nice boost for our team to realize we can beat and play with anyone when we play the right way. When we are patient and clicking on all cylinders, we can be a tough team to beat. Ultimately, I have to do a better job preparing for the things we are struggling with.”

McBain (10-9 overall, 7-5 Highland) was at Kalkaska in its regular season finale on Thursday. The Ramblers open division three district action on Wednesday against Evart, in Farwell. Host Farwell, Lake City and Pine River fill out the rest of the district with the tournament concluding Wednesday for the semi-finals and Friday for the championship.
