Remote Opportunities Are Growing Across the Board — Especially in These Industries

February 7, 2019

Successful female entrepreneur with a new businessAccording to a recent survey, almost two-thirds of homeowners are planning on renovating, and if you’re yearning to remodel your home office, you’re not alone. Remote jobs are growing across the board, and you may be surprised at the countless jobs and industries jumping on the teleworking bandwagon. About 60% of remote workers in the survey said that if they could, they would leave their current job for a full-time remote position at the same pay rate, so if you’re looking to make a drastic lifestyle change that comes with more freedom and flexibility, working remotely is the way to go. Here are just a few of the many industries expected to experience a significant increase in remote work opportunities in the near future.

Psychology/Therapy

Accessibility is improving significantly in the realm of mental healthcare. Virtual counseling and therapist positions are opening up on a regular basis, so if you enjoy helping people and you have relevant experience, this could be the perfect path for you. These positions include all different types of counselors and therapists: drug rehabilitation therapists, trauma and PTSD specialists, and more. Relationship therapists are also common and growing in demand, considering that between 40% to 50% of marriages end in divorce in the United States. If you’re interested in pursuing this type of opportunity, look into companies like Spring Health, Vida Health, Elshen, Inc., New Directions Behavioral Health, Beacon Health Options, and AETNA.

Customer Service

Customer service positions open up each and every day, and each and every day, more of them are available to participate in remotely. Through email, phone, and instant messaging support, customer service representatives help to keep clients happy and keep operations running smoothly for countless businesses all over the globe. Plus, if you have any type of customer service experience or even remote work experience in general, you’re likely to be a leg ahead of the competition.

“Lots of companies hire customer service representatives in work-from-home roles. Common job titles include customer care associate, contact center agent, technical support, and client service representative. As a customer service rep, you’d provide timely, clear support and resolve customer concerns or complaints. Plus, you’d need to understand the product or service that your company offers inside and out,” writes Rebecca Safier on Student Loan Hero.

Computer and IT Systems

You probably aren’t too surprised to see this on the list — at least, you shouldn’t be. Computer and IT systems positions are vital in today’s digital-oriented business landscape. From digital marketing to web programming, web security, engineers, and more, those who are savvy with computers are a shoo-in for these types of positions. If you aren’t sure about taking on a full-time position right off the bat, try your hand at freelancing through sites like Upwork, which allows you to charge an hourly rate for project completion based on current experience and skills. Make sure to keep a consistent collection of the projects you’ve worked on to develop a portfolio to show potential future (and remote) employers.

According to Upwork’s 2018 Future Workforce Report, 38% of hiring managers predict that their employees will work predominantly remotely in the next 10 years. If you didn’t see your industry on this list, fear not — chances are, some form of it will be available as a remote version in the near future. But if you’re looking for an immediate change of career, these remote industries are the best way to go.
