A late rally wasn’t quite enough for the McBain Northern Michigan Christian girls basketball team on Wednesday, March 6. The Lady Comets, battling division four district host Buckley in a semi-final contest, came up just short, 42-41.

“Our girls played a great game, and set a nice tone defensively,” head coach Jason Towers said. “We struggled to make shots, but it we had them stymied defensively. Their guards started hitting from the outside in the second half, and were lights out from the corner. They played a great game defensively too actually. We had a size advantage in the post but they covered it up very well. All-in-all it was a great game.”

NMC took off to slim leads of 108 after the first quarter and 16-12 at the half, but the Lady Bears, who were the eventual district champions, buried three treys in the third to lead 30-24 entering the fourth. Another three put them ahead 33-24, though the Comets began to use their height advantage to pull back in the game, down just 35-32 with just over three minutes left to play.
Paige Ebels knocked down a shot to pull the Comets within 41-40 with 39 ticks remaining. The Bears split a pair of free throws their next time down the court to inch ahead 42-40. NMC had a chance to tie the game in the final seconds with a pair of shots from the stripe as well, but came up short on the second to allow Buckley to escape with the one point win.

Leading the way for the Comets was Ally Sigafoose with 11 points and 15 rebounds, Kari VanPolen had eight points and eight rebounds, Megan Bennett had seven points and seven rebounds, Ally Krick netted seven points and Madelyn Benthem finished with five points and seven rebounds.

NMC finishes the season 13-9 overall.

“This year was a challenge with having only six-to-seven girls on the squad,” Towers said. “I am anticipating eight or nine next year, which will be really nice. We lose two tremendous seniors in Sigafoose and VanPolen but we have some nice young talent coming up. I’m already looking forward to making another run on the district.”
