McBain put up a good fight, but couldn’t quite get by heavily favored Lake City in the two’s division three district championship game at Farwell Friday night. The Lady Trojans, led by standout center Rylie Bisballe had their way with the Lady ramblers as the night went on, playing to a 56-30.

“I did not prepare the girls as well as we could have been,” head coach Drew Bronkema said. “We played tough in the first quarter, but gave them too many easy baskets under the hoop as the game went on.”

The Trojans led 10-5 after the first quarter but took control of things in the second, holding a 29-11 edge at the half they were ahead 40-23 entering the fourth.

Brianna VanHouten led the Ramblers with eight points and Leah Neverth was able to chip in with four.

Rylie Bisbale had a game-high 23 points and Chloe Bisballe had 11 points.

“On Wednesday, March 6 the Ramblers notched a win over Evart in the district semi-finals, 51-19.

“We started out slow, but got in a nice rhythm later in the second half,” Bronkema said. “The girls shared the ball, defended and got out and ran the floor well.”

McBain jumped to a 14-4 lead after the first quarter and held edges of 20-11 at the half and 29-15 entering the fourth.

Emma Schierbeek and Klaudia O’Malley had 11 points each and Couper Agema was able to net nine.

McBain finishes the season 11-10 overall.

“For my first year coaching varsity basketball, it was a memorable one,” Bronkema said. “All 13 girls gave great effort on a daily basis which made my job all the more fun. The five seniors (Klaudia O’Malley, Brianna VanHouten, Ashley Schierbeek, Elizabeth Schneider and Kiya Grundy) will be missed. They set the tone in every practice, and were nice team leaders throughout the year. As far as next year, we return eight girls, four of them being underclassmen, and the other four are juniors. That leaves us a strong core to build off for next year, along with adding some talent off from our JV team as well.”
