It was close throughout, yet the McBain girls basketball team wasn’t able to pick up a win in its regular season finale on Thursday, Feb. 28, as the Ramblers dropped a non-conference game at Kalkaska, 51-48.

“Coming off a big win against Cadillac, we came out flat in the next two games,” head coach Drew Bronkema said. “We have to do better defensively, 51 points is unacceptable. We need to do a better job in practice working hard consistently and ultimately that falls on me.”

The Lady Blazers held a slim 12-9 lead after one, 25-15 at the half and 39-34 entering the final frame.

Pacing the team in the setback was Ashley Schierbeek with 11 points, Emma Schierbeek netted nine and Klaudia O’Malley had eight.

McBain (10-9 overall) battled Evart on Wednesday in a division three district semi-final game at Farwell. Lake City and Pine River played in the other semi-final with the winners moving on to tonight’s (Friday) championship game. The district winner advances to regional play on Monday at McBain.

“For us to have success in the tournament, we will have to get off to good starts, stay focused mentally and do all the little things from start to finish,” Bronkema said.
