On May 4, 2019 the 3rd annual S.P.U.R.S. Event (Special People Understanding Rodeo Skills) was held at Hughston’s Cow Camp in McBain. The day was sunny, warm, and beautiful for approximately 130 attendees and their families, caregivers, and friends.

Experts were on hand helping attendees go for a ride on horseback.

This event was a success due to the 55 volunteers that gave their time and their day to this event to help the attendees enjoy steer roping, bucking bronco, wagon rides through the woods, helping them to ride horseback, enjoy petting and feeding a variety of animals.

All the attendees received a medal for participating in the events along with a picture of them on a “Wanted – Smiles – Poster.”

Lunch was provided by L & J Meats of Lake City, and an ice cream machine was enjoyed by everyone on the warm sunny day!

Visitors from Tall Tails Therapeutic Ranch of Kalkaska came to share some of their experience with the group. “Thank you so much for having this event for our kids, there is nothing around here like this for them to enjoy.”
This was a comment made by one of the caregivers.”

Attendees try their hands at steer romping under the guidance of a volunteer.

“The volunteers love seeing the familiar faces year after year; and say they go home feeling blessed after such an event.” quoted Brenda VanHouten.

Ellen Vanderwal commented “For me was the amazing big smiles on the attendees faces, watching them touch and feed the animals, riding a horse for the first time, and receiving the poster with their face on it.

Receiving the medal was grand, they loved wearing them!”
