The McBain Northern Michigan Christian girls soccer team found itself in a stalemate on Wednesday. The Lady Comets couldn’t find its offensive rhythm at Brethren in a Northern Michigan Soccer League game, as the two sides played to a 0-0 tie.

“We came off the bus flat and didn’t amp it up until the last 10 minutes of the game,” head coach Dave VanHaitsma said. “We were a step slow and had a hard time getting on the same page. We had moments in which we looked great and strung some passes together, but that was often followed by stretches of ineffective play. We closed much stronger but couldn’t convert on any of our late flurries in front of the goal.”

Megan Bennett was in net and made five saves.

“She was aggressively taking away several Brethren opportunities,” VanHaitsma said.

On Monday the Comets notched a hard-fought 3-2 NMSL win at Big Rapids Crossroads.

The Comets netted the game’s first goal just three minutes into the game, when Makayla Hall netted the ball after Brooke VanHaitsma’s shot was deflected.

Crossroads made it 1-1 on a penalty kick in the 29th minutes and the Cougars took a 2-1 lead on another penalty kick 11 minutes into the second half.

NMC fought back however, getting an Ally Krick goal on a VanHaitsma centering pass, putting the score to 2-2 only two minutes later.

With just two minutes to play, Anna Lanser kicked in the game-winner to give the Comets the come-from-behind win. This, after topping the Cougars 6-0 the week before.

“We controlled most of the game, but they played a tough counteroffensive game,” VanHaitsma said. “We also struggled to put quality shots on frame. Last week we didn’t really play any better overall, we simply shot better.

We had some beautiful passing to set up opportunities this game but couldn’t quite find the scorer at the end of most of them. Callie Keysor and Paige Ebels enjoyed strong games in the middle and it was nice to have a healthy Sydney Hart running our attacks again.”

Bennett was in net and made nine saves.

On Friday the Comets played to a 1-1 tie with Clare at home. The Lady Pioneers scored in the eighth minute for a quick 1-0 lead and NMC netted its goal six minutes before the half, on a VanHaitsma penalty kick.

“Each team had opportunities throughout the game but couldn’t capitalize,” VanHaitsma said.

Bennett made 11 saves in goal.

On Wednesday, May 8 the Comets hosted Cheboygan in another NMSL battle, playing to a 0-0 tie.

“It was a relatively evenly played game, they had six shots on goal and we had nine,” VanHaitsma said. “We had some problems with healthy players as several girls were not feeling well and others sustained some injuries. Alaina Rozeveld and Tana VanPolen picked up the slack well in expanded playing time.”

Bennett picked up six saves in goal.

NMC is now 5-3-4 overall and hosts Brethren on Monday.
