Facing one of the top teams in the West Michigan D League, Marion Coach Ryan Raymond knew his softball team would be in for a battle on Monday at Mesick.

And it was a battle they won, sweeping the Bulldogs 10-6 and 9-8, respectively.

“We knew going into it, that they would be a very tough team to beat,” Raymond said. “Dave is a great coach and they have quite the program going on up there. Very classy players and coaches.”

In game one, Marion batted around and scored seven runs in the second inning to take control of the game. Rylie Richards led the way at the plate, going 2-3 with two doubles and three RBIs. Teagan Cox added an RBI triple and a base hit. Payton Raymond collected a hit and two RBIs, while Aspen Lagrow, Hayle Miller, and Jersey Scott each added a hit.

Raymond got the win on the mound, allowing four earned runs while striking out nine – with no walks – in six innings of work.

The Eagles took game one 10-6.

In game two, Marion once again got off to a quick start – scoring six runs in the first two innings – but the Bulldogs weren’t going to go down without a fight.

Mesick clawed back to take the lead in the fourth inning, leading to some late-inning heroics.

The Eagles loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth, and junior Aspen Lagrow came through with a walk-off RBI single to give Marion the 9-8 win.
Lagrow led the way with two hits and three RBIs, while Miller, Richards, and Scott each had multi-hit games with a double and two RBIs apiece. Teagan Cox added a hit and an RBI, while Raymond added a pair of hits.
Raymond got the win in relief, striking out three without allowing an earned run. Miller got the start, pitching three quality innings allowing three earned runs to go with three strikeouts.

Marion (15-5 overall) hosts Mason County Eastern in a conference showdown on Thursday.
