Voting Issues

May 16, 2019

I try to not write about politics, but in good conscience I cannot be silent about the issue of abortion at any stage of development. I cannot vote for anyone who is in favor of the taking the life of an unborn baby. Some of you will balk and want to argue with me that I am a one issue voter and I agree in this sense. For me, I review all the major issues dealing with the nation, state, and local government and keep informed of the political, moral, and economic implications to the best of my ability. If two politicians have similar views and plans for us and one of them is for abortion, that politician will never get my vote.

I would take my opinion a step further and say that even if I agree with a nominee on all other issues across the board and they are pro-abortion, I will not vote for them. If that makes me a single issue voter then so be it. I believe that all human life is sacred and to be nourished and protected.

In his booklet, The Eucharistic Culture of Life VS. The Anti-Eucharistic Culture of Eternal Death: Eucharistic Morality, Louis Guardiola, C.P.M. states that every human life is sacred because is it created by God and has an immortal spirit. He also states that we are created in the image and likeness of God, and have an intellect that can know God. Perhaps even more importantly he states that human life is to be held sacred because God became a human in Jesus for all time, that God gives us his grace to become like him, in all that God is including being united with Jesus in our suffering and cooperating in the world’s salvation through charity (pages 6-7).

Human life is sacred from conception to death. When we begin to chose who lives and who dies we cross the line, making ourselves God. We are not God and it is God’s prerogative who lives and who dies and when. We are the created, not the Creator. Abortion is the killing of the sacred, and I cannot in good conscience ever vote for someone who promotes it.

“May the Lord bless and keep you. May he let his face shine upon you, and give you his grace.”
