The McBain Northern Michigan Christian golf team competed at a division four regional meet at the Muskegon Country Club on Thursday, May 30. The Comets shot 470 as a team to finish 12th overall and had their day highlighted by senior Grant Pogue finishing second with an 18 hole score of 79.

“Our team struggled, but based on the scores, so did several other teams,” head coach Dave Skinner said. “With that being said, I can’t put a value on the experience my new golfers received. There is a bit of pressure that comes with playing a regional and it can be difficult if you’re just starting. A few of them were disappointed with their play, but what I’m going to remember is the growth they made throughout the season. We’re going to build on this year and I look forward to working with a lot of great kids next season.”

Aside from Pogue’s 79, Andrew Eisenga was 52nd with a 111, Ben Gaffke shot a 137 and was 73rd, Silas Bowden was 75th with a 143 and Ben Moore was 78th with a 152.

“Grant had a great day by qualifying for the state meet again,” Skinner said. “He handled adversity very well on a couple holes and I’m proud of his growth in mental strength. The cut was 81 this year compared to last year’s 84, so obviously he needed this 79 to advance.”

The division four finals are Friday and Saturday at the Meadows Golf Course at Grand Valley State University.

McBain competed in a division three regional on Wednesday, May 29 at Sundance Golf Course in Kewadin. The Ramblers shot 444 as a team to finish in 16th, while Big Rapids won the event with a 301.

Leading the team was Kaleb Keathley with a low score of 90 to come in 20th, Tucker Vandervelde carded a 104 and was 55th, Isaac Culp was 81st with a 123 and Drew Vana and Jacob Meekhof each shot a 127 to finish 84th.
