Lady Ramblers capture district finals

The McBain softball team was able to pull off a thrilling hardware-clinching win on Saturday. The Lady Ramblers scored a pair of late runs to pick up a division three district championship, edging Pine River in the title game, held at Lake City, 4-3.

The Lady Bucks took a 2-0 lead early in the game, though McBain showed fight from there.

The Lady Ramblers still trailed 3-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning, but an Isabella Gandolfi RBI single knotted things up at 3-3. Gandolfi came in to score later in the frame, tagging up on a deep fly ball by Alyssa Bode to make it 4-3.

With runners on first and second with two outs in the top of the seventh, the Ramblers got a flyball to rightfielder Megan Taylor for the final out.
McKenna Gilde was the game’s winning pitcher, as she tossed all seven innings, as she gave up three runs on seven hits, six strikeouts and three walks.

Emma Boonstra, Gandolfi and Eisenga had two hits apiece to lead the Ramblers, Gandolfi had two runs and Bode had two RBI.

The Ramblers opened the day with a 20-7 win over Lake City in the semi-finals.

Mikayla Pluger and Gilde both saw action pitching.

Paige VandenBos had a monster game, hitting two home runs and driving in seven runs. Boonstra had three hits and two RBI, Gandolfi had two hits and two RBI.

On Wednesday, May 29 the Ramblers opened up district play with a 6-4 victory over Manton.

Gilde earned the win, as she pitched seven innings and gave up four runs, three earned on eight hits, 15 strikeouts and zero walks.

Leading the offense was Boonstra with three hits and one RBI, Gilde added two hits, Vandenbos had a triple, single and an RBI, Gracie Brunink, Kayda Cotter and Mikayla Pluger had one hit each. Mya Eisenga had two RBI.

McBain (20-16 overall) plays regional host Clare on Saturday, with Standish-Sterling and Hesperia playing in the other semi-final. The regional winner moves on to quarterfinal play on Tuesday at Gaylord.
