It was one heck of a rally. It came up just short however, as McBain wasn’t able to overcome its slow start with division three regional tournament host Clare on Saturday, falling 9-7. The Lady Ramblers trailed the contest by as much as seven runs and nearly pulled off a dramatic comeback.

The Pioneers were able to get on the scoreboard early, scoring three runs in the second and they tacked on one more in the fourth to lead 4-0.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Ramblers were able to find the scoreboard, as Paige VandenBos, who had singled earlier in the frame, came in to score on a groundout by Isabella Gandolfi. Emma Boonstra also had a single in the inning.

Clare extended its lead in the top of the fifth with four more runs, taking a commanding 8-1 lead.

The Ramblers responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth, getting singles by McKenna Gilde and Gracie Brunink. Kayda Cotter drove both in with a two run single to make it 8-3.

Clare tacked on another run in the top of the top of the sixth and still led 9-3 entering the bottom of the seventh.

The Ramblers used base hits by Megan Taylor, Gilde and Brunink to pull with 9-4 and a three run blast by VandenBos pulled the Ramblers within 9-7.

The Pioneers shut the door from there however, retiring the next two batters.

Gilde took the loss pitching while VandenBos had a home run, two singles and three RBI, Brunink had two hits and an RBI, Cotter had a single, one RBI and added a sacrifice fly, Boonstra had a hit and Gilde had a single and scored two runs.

McBain finishes the season 20-17 overall and won its second straight district championship.
