MARION — It’s been a big summer so far for Doug Kinkema and the Marion Rod & Gun Club.

“We had a small gauge ironman shoot that was three weeks ago,” he said. “We had a great turnout. I think we ended up with 37 shooters and we had people from Detroit to shoot it. We can offer that type of shoot whereas some clubs can’t offer what we can. We had a lot of shooters from clubs like Cedar and Petoskey. It was a real good turnout.

“On July 27th, we will have an annual side-by-side shoot, sporting clays, 9 a.m. in the morning. It’s a fun shoot, side-by-side only. Our final shoot is in September, the biggest shoot we have all year, the big Ironman Shoot.”
It’s been a unique year for the club.

“We revamped the pistol range and rifle range,” Kinekma said. “That’s state of the art now. There will be no other 5-stand in northern Michigan like that one. The club is looking up. After the small gauge shoot we had there were people from a lot of clubs. These clubs are hurting. But we’ve had good membership participation.”
