The summer of 2019 has gone by much to fast, it seems like yesterday it was Memorial Day weekend and people were looking forward to the long summer weeks ahead. Who would have dreamed we would now be entering the home stretch. One sure sign it’s that time of year is the return of Marion Old Fashion Days, one of the biggest and best hometown festivals in Northern Michigan. This past weekend the little community tripled in size as visitors from around the Great Lakes and beyond came to town for a weekend of old fashioned family fun.

Festivities officially kicked off Friday August 2, downtown with yard sales, street vendors and a corn hole tournament before the highlight of the evening the popular Cruise In Car, Truck and Bike cruise down Main Street.

This year’s cruise featured one of the largest turnout of sparkling vehicles seen in a number of years. You name it, if it had wheels, beauty, history and in many cases plenty of muscle chances are it could be found in the cruise.

This years Kids Parade winning entry was “Grumpy Old Men”.

Temperatures hovered in the upper ‘70’s to around 82 for daytime highs both days much cooler than last years sweltering 90’s. Bright and early Saturday runners hit the pavement for the Marion Days 5K run/walk. In addition to the run golfers took to the links in the golf scramble while others headed to the courts for the Three on Three Basketball tournament and to the ball diamond’s for softball action. Those looking for a slower pace checked out the many sales and activities in and around Main St.

Everyone agrees Marion Old Fashion Days are great! however the Marion Car, Truck, Bike and Semi Show at the Marion Fairgrounds/Veteran’s Memorial Park in memory of Orris and Nancy Brackett is nothing short of amazing!. For the last 15 years vehicle owners and enthusiast’s from the U.S. and Canada have been bringing some of the most beautiful and unique vehicles ever seen to display along side many vintage and popular vehicles from yesterday and today

Three on three-basketball, softball, horseshoe, a volleyball tournament and the Car, Bike and truck show kept Veteran’s Memorial Park a buzzing with non-stop activity throughout the festival.

“Oh Beautiful” best describes this tribute car dedicated to all those who gave the ultimate sacrifice in the Vietnam war.

Saturdays highlight was once again the Children’s and Grand parade that took place on Main Street. This year’s parade theme “Milling Around The Pond ” focused on the fun many generations have enjoyed in the little town by the old Millpond.

The festival wrapped up Sunday with a VFW Breakfast, Volleyball Tournament and a Cardboard Flotilla.

The 2019 Marion Old fashion Days is for now a pleasant summer memory, however, it won’t belong until 2020 so make plans now to attend. Coming improvements to the historic old Millpond should make next year’s event bigger and better.
