Throughout the centuries many Christians have used rote prayer as to meditate and practice the presence of God. The Sign of the Cross, The Our Father, Hail Mary and the Glory Be are recited millions of times each day around the world as Catholics pray the rosary. While most Christians have memorized these prayers and recite them often, there is another prayer that is not as familiar to most Christians, even Catholics. That prayer is the Jesus prayer.

The Jesus prayer is a simple prayer used more in the Easter Orthodox churches than in

The Western Christian churches. I first heard of it in my twenties and have made it a habit since then. I have found comfort using this prayer as a meditation in times of anxiety, and confusion, and have practiced it in times of joy and peace. It is a simple one-line prayer that can be repeated in almost any circumstance or focused on in thought, no matter what you are doing.

“Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, Have mercy on me!” This prayer is simple, to the point, expresses our dependence on God, and is a fundamental way to invite Jesus into your life all the time and practice his continual presence. One of the best ways that I have used this prayer is to repeat it over and over in a reverent way for a little while as I enter a peaceful, calm state. In this way I can sense the presence of Jesus and the unconditional love he has for me. I can say this prayer when I get up in the morning and throughout the day until I fall asleep. Whenever I have a spare moment, I can let my thoughts turn to Jesus.

If you have never practiced the Jesus Prayer, I would challenge you to begin praying it.

I think you will be amazed at the difference it can make in how you feel and think. Just reverently repeat it over and over. “Jesus Son of God, have mercy on me! Jesus Son of God have mercy on me! Jesus Son of God, have mercy on me!”

“May the Lord bless and keep you. May he let his face shine upon you and give you his peace.”
