Tuesday was a pretty eventful night for the McBain volleyball team. The Lady Ramblers, were not only able to pick up a 25-23, 25-22, 21-25, 19-25 and 19-27 Highland Conference win over Pine River; it was also senior night and the team’s night of Purple Crush.

“We were honoring this match to Jerry Eisenga and his family,” head coach Shawn Murphy said. “Jerry recently lost his battle with Pancreatic Cancer, and the volleyball team had been raising money for him and his family all month, so there was quite a bit of emotion riding through our gym. Lastly on our agenda was to play in this match the way we knew we could be playing most of this season, and the team was able to accomplish that.”

McBain played well despite the emotions running high.

“We knew that we would match up with Pine River well, and we were able to get some points on our serving, as well as their errors,” Murphy said. “Our goal was to try to minimize our errors and to get good runs of points. I think this was a good confidence boost for a team that right now plays somewhat hesitant at times.”

Emma Schierbeek led the team with 22 kills, 27 digs, two blocks and one ace and Leah Neverth had seven kills, 42 assists and 11 digs.

“I was really impressed with the tough play at the net by our freshman Gabbie Verberkmoes,” Murphy said. “She was able to pull out six blocks, along with 5 kills. Analiese Fredin finished out the last game with strong serving, and for the night served 100-percent with one ace, along with six kills.”

McBain was at Mt. Pleasant Sacred Heart on Wednesday and opens division three district play at home on Monday against Lake City.
