After suffering their first Highland Conference loss just two days prior, McBain bounced back with a win over Evart on Thursday, Jan. 30. The Ramblers, listed as an honorable mention in the division three associated press rankings topped the Wildcats 74-43.

“The first half was vey close with us leading 29-26 at the half,” head coach Bruce Koopman said. “In the first half, Evart was just playing harder and with more energy. We made some adjustments at halftime defensively and executed better on offense to open the game up.”

Evart actually led the game 12-11 after the first quarter, before McBain made it their lead at 29-26 at the break.

The Ramblers were able to take control of the game in the second half thanks to their offense putting up 45 points in the final two quarters.

“Our offensive executing has been an issue at times where we take bad shots, don’t cut hard or screen which makes for bad offensive rebounding as well,” Koopman said. “We talk about energy and how guys hustling and working hard is contagious and the guys just went to work on both ends of the floor. It was a solid conference win and it keeps us one game up on everyone else in the league.”

Leading the way in the win was Connor Murph with 16 points, Mason Heuker had 11, George Brown added 10 and Ethan Barton netted eight.

The junior varsity team won by a score of 59-40. Leading that one was Carsten Huttenga with 12 points, Dylan Schonert netted 10 and Kalvin McGillis scored eight.

McBain (9-2 overall, 9-1 Highland) played at McBain Northern Michigan Christian on Wednesday, hosts Roscommon tonight (Friday), stays at home to play Pine River on Tuesday and battles Houghton Lake at home on Feb. 19.
